Dr. Paul Roe PhD (York) M.A. F.T.C.L
Paul Roe is a musician with particular interests in performance, research, education and participative music making. He is a performer of international repute and has given performances throughout Europe, Asia and North America. He has a PhD in Performance Practice from the University of York, a Masters Degree in Community Music from the University of Limerick and is a Fellow of Trinity College, London. He is a performer (clarinet and bass clarinet) of international repute and was Associate Principal Clarinet of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland from 1987-2000. Paul's career profile in music is broad based with ongoing commitments in performance, teaching, examining and community music. He is a member of the teaching staff at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin. In 2008 Paul received a Fulbright Scholars award to study Klezmer performance at Mannes College of Music, New York. He is the Irish National Chairperson for the International Clarinet Association for whom he regularly writes music reviews.

PERFORMANCE
Orchestral

Extensive experience as an orchestral player having held leading chairs in both symphony and chamber ensembles. In the years 1987-2000 performances with the above named orchestras numbered over 100 per year. This included opera, ballet, concert tours and subscription series concerts throughout Ireland, Europe and Asia, including performances with some of the world's greatest soloists and conductors including Pavarotti, Carreras, Domingo. Apart from the orchestral positions held many other engagements have been undertaken with most of Ireland's professional orchestras including the RTE Concert Orchestra, Irish Chamber Orchestra and the Ulster Orchestra.

Chamber Music
1987 to Date
Many performances in a variety of chamber music ensembles since 1987 including performances at music and arts festivals throughout Ireland, Europe, U.S.A. and the Far East. Extensive repertoire from early classical to twenty-first century.

Bridegwood Ensemble (Piano, Violin, Clarinet and Cello)
Strands Trio (Piano, Clarinet and Cello)
Sound-Weave (Clarinet and Actor/Narrator)

Contemporary Music
1989 to Date Member of Concorde Contemporary Music Ensemble
Regular performances with Concorde of "New-Music" both nationally and Internationally at contemporary music festivals. Many national and world-premieres of contemporary compositions and in particular compositions by Irish composers. Concorde regularly commission new work from Irish composers and frequently works with international guest soloists. In recent years Concorde has performed at international festivals in USA, Italy, Germany, the Slovak Republic, Romania, Latvia and The Netherlands. An annual concert series promoted by Concorde at the Hugh Lane Gallery of Modern Art in Dublin has been running for over 25 years. Other contemporary performances include guest appearance with many of Ireland's leading ensembles in Contemporary Music including the Crash Ensemble, Vox 21 and Nua Nos. I have an ongoing commitment to the development of Contemporary music in Ireland through commissions, performances, workshops and presentations. Regular creative collaborations with composers and performers in the development of new work and repertoire.

MUSIC EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY MUSIC

1980 to Date
Extensive teaching experience at all levels from novice to professional; initially primarily in the area of instrumental and ensemble coaching, more recently (since 2000) undergraduate and postgraduate teaching with the additional focus of facilitating music in community settings.
Workshop leading in a wide variety of education and health settings, including creative music workshops in many primary and post-primary schools throughout Ireland and also in various health settings for people with physical and mental disabilities.
Extensive examining experience from primary to postgraduate level.
